Hey what’s up! I’m Dayon Cotton, and welcome to my Medium profile! If you’re new here, I hope you enjoy what you read.
I’m a writer of many things — sexuality, masculinity, mental health, money personal essays. I believe in challenging the world and the betterment of social values and people. If we can make the world better, if only a little bit, I’ll probably write about in some way.
On a personal note, I consider myself a pretty chill guy. Originally from Texas, I’m good ole’ Southern boy with a big heart. I have been writing since I was…
In my freshman year of high school, I created my first true encounter with cold weather training. While it wasn’t the first time I performed physical activity in chilly conditions, it was my first time it became meaningful.
During that time, I had built up a reputation amongst high school football team as being incredibly fit and persistent. So during our first full cardio day in relentless Texas cold, I struggled. More than struggled, I gave up.
A particular coach of mine that high hopes for my brand of stubbornness took notice. He wasn’t just disappointed, but pissed off with…
This pandemic has exasperated this sense of loneliness in a new way. For myself, I’m a government worker. Due to the pandemic, I worked fewer hours, but my salary pay provided me with a consistent paycheck with great benefits shielding me from financial hazards.
This allowed me to deep-dive into my pursuits of passions and various side hustles that I normally wouldn’t be able to. Generally, I specialize in online writing and blogging, but the new free time has allowed me to venture into other projects such as YouTube video editing and editing for other writers.
It’s also brutally lonely.
Why do so many men have a hard time believing the hardship of women?
Over the years, I have always been disturbed at how normalized abuse against women has become. Whether it’s something as seemingly “minor” as degradation through incessant name-calling or something monstrous such as sexual assault, it’s often rare for women to gain the sympathy of their men peers.
Abuse against women isn’t limited to rape or sexual harassment — it’s the everyday moments of degradation that add up over time. The things many men consider “normal” or “minor” are often a huge deal to our feminine counterparts.
It took me way too long to launch my personal YouTube channel, and mostly, that’s because I became my own worst enemy. I hate to admit it, but I wasted way too much time trying to optimize every single aspect of the process.
Eventually, my desire for optimization led to outright perfectionism. If it didn’t reach my unrealistically high expectations, I would either rework it or throw it out. This habit started off small, at first, then it devolved into a full-blown obsession.
And thus, I waited months for putting out my first real piece of content due to perfection…
“The worst guilt is to accept an unearned guilt.”
Russian-American Writer/ Philosopher, Ayn Rand
A while back, I wrote about the sexual assault of the first woman I ever cared for. That singular moment left me with a lot of rage and confusion that I had been forced to live with. While I may be smiling in the present, that pain is never quite gone.
It wasn’t the easiest article to write. In fact, writing it was so difficult, I was secretly hoping nobody would read it. …
“I’ll say this: The scariest monster in the world is human beings and what we are capable of, especially when we get together.”
From what I was told through the phone, he caught pneumonia and got ill out of nowhere. Tried to take him to our local hospitals but apparently, they were both at max capacity. Whether that’s racist bullshit or the sad truth of Covid raging in my hometown, I don’t know. Instead, he had to be driven to the next town 30 minutes away. …
“Free speech is one of the most important things to me, but I think it gets confusing when it comes to offense. Because for one, just because you have the right to say anything, it doesn’t mean you have to.”
— Comedian Ricky Gervais —
Viewing my social media these days is a lot like annual Black Friday shopping in America. There are so many good options to look at, but being there is an absolute clusterfuck.
With much of the world in a state of self-isolation, so too is our social lives. To deal with the current events of…
America is rife with homophobia and you find out pretty quickly at a young age.
I remember very not-so fondly how that played out. What was once a simple thing would live on to be something deeply regrettable later on in life. Something that seemed so minor at the time, but so hurtful when you look deeper.
As kids growing up in Black America, we had a term for describing bad things that happened to us.
Your friend did something you didn’t like? “Stop being gay.” A situation that pissed you off? “That’s gay.” A bad day at…
“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”
Stoic Philosopher, Marcus Aurelius
The internet is a vast and interesting place — it’s a digital melting pot of personalities and personas. A place where culture and technology collide to reveal more about the world around you. The internet is a platform where ideas and information are submitted at unprecedented speed.
And ever since I began my journey into the digital world, I can’t help but notice the friction between men and women.
