Honestly, I think it just depends on personal style. I'm a generalist writer and intentionally choose not to niche down. I can switch from different writing topics without dropping quality because I'm very inspired about many topics.
I usually cater each article to the needs of the pub and let the audience decide from there. Yeah it may be slower in growth, but it builds your brand as someone who isn't a one-trick pony. However, having a niche can be cool too for faster growth--your audience knows exactly what to expect.
So yeah I think it just depends on individual style.
Also, I'm a military writer too. It's cool to see someone else on this platform.
