The Introspective Power of Sitting With Your Problems
If These Walls Could Talk
As someone with a tendency of overthinking, this quarantine time is both a blessing and a curse. You’re forced to sit still in a solitary environment as your thoughts run free. Even worse, you may be thinking about your problems. The many challenges and what-if’s that are resulting from this uncertain time period of our lives.
Deep thinking is a hell of a drug. It can lead to passionate, creative highs — and anxiety-inducing fear if you allow it.
You could run from it. Just run from all of it. Why sit alone and allow yourself to be miserable with your many problems when you can find ways to entertain yourself? Sure. Go ahead and find something amusing to distract yourself with. Enjoy the latest video game, check out another Netflix Original (I hear Money Heist is pretty good), or just drink until you can’t think about it anymore.
However, no matter how hard you distract yourself, your problems are still there. Distraction is no replacement for true meditation and ruminations. Today, your problems may be something as minor as deciding your latest meal or as major as figuring out how to pay for your next meal.
The truth of the matter is that you have to face your problems. The challenges people are facing today are immense. We’re living in a world that includes a rampant virus that doesn’t care about your privilege, record-breaking unemployment numbers, and the existential crisis that comes with realizing just how little control we have in this wave of change.
Despite that wave of negativity, you have to give yourself a chance. A chance to confront those harsh truths and face it in the eyes.
Yeah, this new reality we’re living in. It sucks. It really sucks.
Want to know what’s worse than our new reality?
Giving up and running away.
Procrastination is just a fun-sounding word for “not owning up to your shit”. You can’t keep running away from what your soul deems most important to you.
Rumination is the Way — Let Your Mind Wander
Prior to this whole world-changing pandemic, I had chosen to sign up for therapy in an effort to make real lasting change to my problems. Facing your problems and allowing them to talk to you, can often give you the solution you need.
It’s not easy by no measure. Way before this pandemic started, I’m sure everyone had a long list of problems that rather not confront. That list has probably been multiplied in the short time of invoking social distancing measures. Those issues hurt in a unique way. They make us feel insecure and you feel the weight of this world on our shoulders.
You may feel guilt as you wonder just how to provide for yourself and your loved ones.
You may sadness, or some level of frustration, with the powerless you feel to change anything.
You may feel a wide variety of emotions that lead to self-destructive thoughts and harsh reminders.
Ultimately, it’s good to feel those negative emotions. In traveling through the darkness, you will eventually find the light at the end of the tunnel. However, if you run or do nothing, then yeah it’s going to suck.
Your Problems Can Be A Great Mentor
Learn from this. Learn from all of it. Learn as much as you can. Take this time of solitary introspection and gain new insight. Use it to push you forward.
I mean it. Your problems can be powerful fuel to your inner fire. Just like anger will push you to action, so can your inner spirit and outward challenges.
In searching through the details of “what went wrong” and “how to fix it”, use those solutions to better yourself.
Now, is a great time for personal self-analysis. It’s time to have a conversation with the walls around you.
